Should I Only Believe The Words in Red?
By Billy Graham, Tribune Media Services
Q: My aunt gave me a Bible that has the words of Jesus printed in red.
Are those words printed in red the ones I'm supposed to believe? I am
trying to read them when I have time. Or should I believe other parts
of the Bible also? -- S.G.
A: Some people find "red letter Bibles" (as they are called) helpful, because they can find Jesus' exact words very quickly. They first became popular about a century ago; before that no distinction was usually made between the words of Jesus and the rest of the Bible.
You should believe the entire Bible and make it part of your life, not just those parts that are printed in red. The reason is because the whole Bible is God's Word, not just part of it. In other words, the parts that are printed in black in your Bible are just as much God's Word as the parts that are printed in red. The Bible says that "All Scripture is God-breathed (or God-given)" (2 Timothy 3:16). The psalmist wrote, "All your words are true; all your righteous laws are eternal" (Psalm 119:160). This is why you should make the Bible part of your life every day.
Think of it: Every day our minds are filled with things that are happening right now -- but the Bible tells us about those things that will last forever. It tells us who we are and why God put us here; it also tells us how we should live. But most of all it tells us about Jesus, who came from heaven to save us from our sins.
Open your heart and life to Jesus Christ. Then let God speak to you through His Word, the Bible, every day. The Bible says, "The unfolding of your words gives light" (Psalm 119:130).
