Conway fits right in with dysfunctional White House

Ruben Navarrette Jr. on

SAN DIEGO -- As White House counselor, Kellyanne Conway has a simple job that is often -- because of clown shows and self-inflicted wounds -- not so simple: She has to make the president look good.

As of late, however, Conway is making herself look bad. As a former congressional aide and pollster, she knows a lot about politics and public opinion. But her people skills need work.

What triggered Conway was an article written by Caitlin Yilek, who covers breaking news for the Washington Examiner. Yilek wrote about how Conway is being considered for White House chief of staff, and the article included a line about how Conway has "been in the middle of [President] Trump's barbs with her husband, George, a conservative lawyer who frequently makes headlines for his criticism of the president."

Kellyanne Conway was furious and had her assistant contact Yilek. Then she grabbed the phone and leapt into a seven-minute screed.

The newspaper posted the audio as well as a transcript of the full exchange.

"I was wondering why in God's Earth you would need to mention anything about George Conway's tweets in an article that talks about me as possibly being chief of staff," Kellyanne Conway told Yilek.

The conversation went downhill from there. The low points include Conway calling Yilek a "non-reporting reporter," dismissing the reference to any conflict between her work life and home life as "just for clicks," and informing the reporter that "nobody read your story."

At first, Conway tried to deny that there was any bad blood between her husband and her boss.

Last year, George Conway called the Trump administration a "s--- show in a dumpster fire." Earlier this year, he suggested Trump had a narcissistic disorder. You think?

Trump fired back by calling the lawyer a "stone cold LOSER & husband from hell" and a "whack job."
