Who fills in for Santa in other parts of the world?

on

Published in Daily Trivia

The jolly fellow who gives gifts on Dec. 25th isn't called Santa around the world. The actual gift givers are different in various countries. In England he's Father Christmas. as in France (Pere Noel). In Germany it's the Christkindel, the angelic messenger from Jesus, a beautiful fair haired girl with a shining crown of candles. In Holland it's St Nicholas, Italy it's La Befana (a kindly old witch) and in Spain and South America it's The Three Kings. In some parts of Russia it's Babouschka (a grandmotherly figure) who does the giving, and in other parts it's Grandfather Frost. And in Scandinavia there are a whole variety of Christmas gnomes one of whom is called Julenisse.
