(UPI) Firefighters responded to a water treatment plant in Colorado to rescue a poop-covered dog spotted struggling in a sewage pond.

The Pueblo West Fire Department said in a Facebook post that workers estimated the dog had been stranded in the aeration pond for about 90 minutes before they heard her barking for help.

"She was exhausted," Pueblo West Fire Department Division Chief Brad Davidson told KCNC-TV.

Davidson said the conditions in the aeration pond could have proven life-threatening to the dog. He said that if the canine had ventured further toward the middle of the pond "she would not have been able to float."

"Crews worked calmly not to startle the dog and assisted it out of the culvert," the fire department's Facebook post said. The dog was then decontaminated as were the crew and all tools.

Firefighters said the dog was wearing tags and officials were working to reunite her with her owner.
