(UPI) A Florida dog grooming business took on a late-night emergency when a dog was found at a roadside with mats so bad they formed a "mummified cast" over his body.

BGE Grooming in Oviedo said on its Facebook page that a member of the public saved the dog from being hit by a car Wednesday night in Orange County and discovered the canine's fur was matted so badly that he couldn't walk or go to the bathroom.

"They were soaking wet, infested with fleas, full of yeast infection and attached like a mummified cast," the business' Facebook post said of the dog's fur mats. The smell was horrendous.

The business opened its doors for the special midnight grooming session.

"It took two hours just to safely shave his painful mats off, two flea baths because he was so severly infested, two soothing hypoallergenic baths, and lots of love and care! How cute is he?!" BGE Grooming said in posting pictures of the clean and shorn canine.

Salon owner Kari Falla said she knew it was an emergency case as soon as she saw the dog.

"We always groom rescue dogs and shelter does for free, so as soon as I found out, it was a no brainer," Falla told WKMG-TV. We believe in paying it forward. Sharing a little bit of kindness goes a lot way. And in this case, it saved a life.

The dog, believed to be a Goldendoodle mix, was dubbed "Lucky" and spent some time with a veterinarian before going into foster care, where he is said to be doing well.
