(UPI) -- Animal control officers discovered an exotic cat wandering around a neighborhood in New Jersey on Thursday.

Paterson animal control officers picked up the Savannah cat after residents spotted it wandering around in the city north of Newark.

Savannah cats are a mixture between a domestic cat and the serval, a large wild cat from Africa.

The cat is recovering at Wildlife Freedom Animal Rescue after it was tranquilized by animal control officers.

Wildlife Freedom owner Dee Garbowski told News 12 the Savannah cat, which can cost more than $20,000, was likely kept as a pet.

"I'm sure it was somebody's pet. They're very expensive cats to purchase," Garbowski said. You can almost walk them around on a leash like a dog. I did a lot of research, but we'll see that happens.
