AUSTIN, Texas (UPI) -- A cat found covered in dirt and caught in a raccoon trap in Texas turned out to be much older than rescuers initially believed.

Austin Animal Center shared photos of the white cat named Klaus after he was found covered in grease and dirt in the trap near an area junkyard.

Klaus was antisocial and scared upon arriving at the shelter and staffers estimated he was a feral kitten that was likely about one year old.

Staffers later tested Klaus, who came to the shelter extremely skinny, and determined he was suffering from anemia and was actually 9 years old, according to the Dodo.

"He is very timid — possibly because he doesn't feel good," Klaus' foster mother Carla Penny said. He is eating well and I am hopeful he'll put on some weight and his red blood cells will build back up.

Since arriving at a foster home, Klaus has become slightly more friendly, as staffers work to get his weight up and prepare him for adoption.

"When he first came in he was hissing and backing away because he was frightened, but now he has warmed up so much," Hanna Peterson of the Austin Animal Center said. He loves to be pet all over but is still a bit reserved and shy,
