Pop Goes Coral: Juice Up A Summer Wardrobe

Sharon Mosley on

Want to light up your summer holidays without always waving the red, white and blue fashion flag? Then add some fiery coral to your sunny sartorial life. As the "color of the year," coral and all its orange cousins are taking center stage on fashion runways this season. Here are some ways to pop your summer wardrobe with the adventurous hues.

-- Pop with your favorite orange. Skin tone and hair color may have a lot to do with what "flavor" of orange looks best on you. If you happen to be a redhead, then any of these shades will work. If your skin and hair are darker, the bolder coppery shades of orange will be more flattering. And if your skin and hair are lighter and blonder in tone, then a paler shade of coral like apricot will look magical on you.

-- Pop for makeup. Lipsticks and nail polishes also abound in this color range in summer collections. Always experiment with different shades to find what you like best. You can also add a glowing bronzer to your face or wear a self-tanner with a gleaming finish to get the sun-kissed look that complements coral colors so well. Check out Revlon's new Holochrome collection of blushing nail enamel at Walgreens.

-- Pop with a swimsuit. If you're lucky enough to score a mid-season sale on swimwear, then you might consider snapping up a few pieces in this fresh color palette, whether it's a one-piece maillot or a floral bikini with matching board shorts. Mix and match the swimwear with other beach-ready separates for a tangy new look to get you through the rest of the summer. Check out the sale on swimwear at Athleta.

-- Pop it with a dress. Need a cool new dress for the office? Chic new shirtdresses or sheaths in vibrant oranges may be the perfect fit for hot summer days. And if you need a dress for a special occasion such as a wedding or cocktail party, a tiered ruffle chiffon midi dress in a tropical print may be just the showstopper you need. Check out the dress collection at J.Crew.

-- Pop with a top. This may be the easiest way to inject some spice into your wardrobe. Just scope out tank tops and crew necks at your favorite discount stores. Then wear them with jean shorts or layer them under jackets for a new slice of color. The coral shades go well with summer's favorite bottom basics: white jeans and pants. Guys, this goes for you, too. A tangy polo is just what you need to squeeze some summer fun into your wardrobe. Check out all things orange at Target.

-- Pop with accessories. When you're choosing accessories to wear with these juicy colors, go for the gold. Gold reflects the warmth of the orange tones. And in shimmering metallics, jewelry, handbags and shoes set off the sunset colors. Think large gold hoops, chunky cuff bracelets and strappy gold sandals -- of course, with coral nail polish on those toes you can't wait to burrow into the sand.
