Father's Day Fashion Flash: Hot Summer Fashion Trends for Men

Sharon Mosley on

Whether you're a guy who just wants to add some cool fashion factor to your summer wardrobe or someone who wants to help Dad up his style game, there are always new ways to refresh menswear for summer. Skip the baggy shorts and Fruit of the Loom T-shirts. Here are some hot gift ideas for the special men in your life -- or yourself.

-- Get sporty. When the temperature soars, it's time to take some time off from the long sleeves and the buttoned-up life. Sporty shirts in lightweight cottons and linens are now the staples to stock up on. Whether it's a short-sleeved pastel plaid shirt or a vivid bright oxford, either can be worn by itself or layered over a crew neck or V-neck T-shirt. Keep the look cool and wear untucked and unbuttoned, guys!

-- Patterned shirts. Steer clear of the old Hawaiian shirts that announced your arrival the next beach over. Instead, keep it colorful with more subtle floral patterns that still are fun and give summer dressing a feel-good vibe. Layer over swim trunks, tank tops and shorts.

-- Yikes! Stripes are a summer perennial. But this year, instead of the classic horizontal Breton nautical stripes, the lines are being drawn in another whole new direction. Think vertical! Classic navy and white on a knit pullover, polo shirt or lightweight sweater is on trend this summer. Mix and match with dark denim, khakis or linen pants.

-- The new pants. Think outside the denim dilemma and pull on a pair of cool cotton, cotton/Lycra or cotton/linen pants that are designed like jeans but can work for casual office days when worn with a woven shirt. Colors range from soft blue and pink to sand and mocha.

-- Shorter shorts. While most men will opt to wear their shorts "right above the knee," shorter shorts that hit mid-thigh are heating up the fashion scene. Reminiscent of those tennis shorts in the '90s, wear these shorts at your own risk ... and if you've been hanging out at the gym this winter.

-- Go green. The new color to buy this summer? Sage green. A little darker than your typical summer tropical green, the warm greens are adding a fresh twist to the preppy pastels that usually show up this time of year. Besides the olive palette, gray is another stylish summer alternative.

-- A pullover for those breezy nights. The Henley is a collarless pullover with buttons on the placket. It can be worn alone or layered over V-necks or tank tops. Consider a Henley in a rib texture. Or think about a hoodie in a floral pattern (see "Patterned shirts" above).

-- The jean jam. Distressed jeans are perfect for summer in light blue washes. The white jean paired with a white T-shirt and white sneakers is also trending. But for a dressier occasion, pair classic pieces like a white button-down shirt with the dark blue or black straight-fit jeans, which can become more formal with a blazer and boat shoes.

-- Chunky sneakers. While many men are reluctant to try them, the white leather athletic "Dad" sneakers seem to be here to stay. The Vans style and boat shoes are also making a comeback for this summer season.

-- Sunglasses are other summer essentials that make great gifts. Think oversized aviators, square Wayfarers and cool retro horn-rimmed sunglasses. If you don't feel comfortable picking out a pair of shades for your dad, then give him a gift certificate. You can never have too many sunnies!

-- Get in the game. Bucket hats and baseball hats are men's accessory essentials that will go with everything. Better yet, get that special hat and take your dad out to the ballgame! And don't forget the hot dogs.
