Microsoft pays more than $300 million to buy its Silicon Valley campus

MOUNTAIN VIEW, California — Microsoft has paid well over $300 million to buy a huge Mountain View tech campus the company occupies, a fresh sign of how the software leviathan has established its roots in Silicon Valley.
In a $330 million deal, Microsoft bought an office and research hub at 1045 La Avenida Street in Mountain View where it now operates, documents filed on Sept. 4 with the Santa Clara County Recorder’s Office show.
Washington state-based Microsoft bought the campus through an all-cash transaction.
Mission West Properties, a veteran real estate and development firm that acted through an affiliate, sold the the campus to Microsoft, according to the public documents.
In 2017, Microsoft unveiled plans to revamp and reconstruct an existing campus in Mountain View as an upgraded complex totaling 643,000 square feet.
The tech company began moving into the complex in late 2019. The campus is large enough to accommodate 2,000 to 3,000 workers.
The just-bought campus has a prominent location next to the interchange of U.S. Highway 101 and State Route 85 in Mountain View and is near the corner of North Shoreline Boulevard and La Avenida Street.
Mission West Properties had leased the 33.3-acre site to Microsoft for several years before the tech company bought the property this week.
The deal appears to be the largest real estate purchase in Santa Clara County this year, measured by dollar amount. It’s also one of the largest in the Bay Area in 2024.
The Mountain View campus has served as Microsoft’s primary campus and employment hub in the Bay Area for several years.
Starting in 2017, Microsoft has bought multiple properties in the Bay Area besides this latest purchase.
The tech titan has bought sites in Mountain View near its campus and also has bought vacant land in north San Jose, including the Alviso district.
