Auto review: 2024 Corvette E-Ray a successful blend of hybrid efficiency, power you expect
Published in Automotive News
It's as good as it gets in Grasso’s Garage: Here comes the 2024 Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray. Chevrolet’s recent release of the hybrid pairing, ground-pounding convertible option, that now displays mid-engine power and supercar-like curvatures.
Wrapped in Ceramic Matrix Gray Metallic with full-length electric blue racing stripes, the mid-engine Corvette has a similar appeal to our previously tested 2023 Corvette Stingray when the focus is on the powertrain. Our tester — a convertible 3LZ with a 6.2L V8 direct injection engine producing 495 horsepower paired with the eAWD electric drive unit — produces an additional 160 horsepower, combining for over 655 horsepower.
The 1.9 kWh lithium-ion self-charging battery afforded great energy to the front wheels and delivered maximum responsiveness, efficiency and performance. Torque for the E-Ray came in at 595 lb-ft as the electric motor added an additional 125 on its own. Transmission selected for the E-Ray was an 8-speed dual clutch. Our 0-to-60 test came in at an impressive 2.5 seconds.
The E-Ray boasts more-than-ample space and comfort for both the driver and passenger, while the driver enjoys that cockpit-like feel, from the over-extended center console that is integrated efficiently into the infotainment center and dash. Our upgraded options on our E-Ray tester were the addition of carbon fiber on the interior trim, carbon-flash wheels, and an engine appearance package for those future car shows to enjoy.
When Chevrolet delivers a Corvette into Grasso’s Garage, it’s like a homecoming. As a current and past owner, we enjoy the ever-evolving Corvette and its endless upgrades to an already exorbitant mid-engine release. Grasso’s Garage houses a fleet of Corvettes on its own. It includes a family-owned 1970 Convertible, 2007 Z06, 2011 Grand Sport Convertible, 2016 ZO6, and 2023 Z06. Clearly the passion runs deep for Corvettes, and we cannot think of a better release and a great way to keep the supercar alive with the hybrid addition.
Kudos to Chevrolet, and with the mid-engine ZR1 unveiling just a week ago, we cannot wait to get a test of that and maybe even get a potential order form (wink, wink).
