What If God Asks Me to do Something I Don't Want to Do?

Q: Friends of mine say I ought to seek God's will for some decisions I've got to make, but why should I do that? I believe in God and all that, but I'm afraid He'll ask me to do something I don't want to do. - P.D.

A: The first step in finding God's will is to want to find God's will. All too often, we say we want God's will - but in reality, we only want Him to bless our plans. Or if His will looks like it's too hard or doesn't agree with our plans, then we cast it aside and go our own way.

But I hope you'll remember two things about God's will - whether it involves something major (such as who we'll marry or what career we'll follow), or something that seems to be minor to us (although nothing is insignificant to God). First, God wants us to know His will. He loves us and wants what is best for us - and when we sincerely seek His will, He'll guide us to it. This is why the Bible urges us to "First seek the counsel of the Lord" (1 Kings 22:5).

Second, remember that God's will is always best for us - always. It may not seem so at the time - but it's true. We see only part of the picture; God sees the whole. We think our way is best - but His way is far better. The Bible says, "For I know the plans I have for you... plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future" (Jeremiah 29:11).

Begin by committing your life to Jesus Christ. He loves you so much that He was willing to give His life for you. Open your heart to Him, and then humbly ask Him to guide you as you make decisions about your future - and He will.
