Why can't I talk to a medium?

Q: I've told my children that after I die I want to communicate with them, and I've told them to find a medium who can arrange this. But one of my sons refuses, because he says it goes against his beliefs. This really hurts me. What's wrong with him? -- Mrs. N.S.
A: Elsewhere in your letter, you mention that this son told you he has committed his life to Jesus Christ -- and that's undoubtedly why he refuses, because he knows the Bible forbids it.
Why is this? The reason is because any type of occult activity (including attempts to communicate with the dead through a spirit medium) can involve us with spiritual forces that are not from God, but are absolutely opposed to God. On the surface, they may appear innocent or harmless -- but in reality, they aren't. The Bible is very clear: "Let no one be found among you ... who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead" (Deuteronomy 18:10-11).
My real concern, however, is for you. Those who follow occult beliefs would have us believe that the next world is a place of peace and happiness -- but this isn't necessarily true. The Bible tells us eternity is real -- but if we've turned our backs on the living God and rejected His Son, we have no hope of Heaven. Instead our destiny will be that place of absolute loneliness and despair the Bible calls Hell, separated from God forever.
Don't be deceived, and don't miss the great gift God offers you -- the gift of eternal life. Instead, repent of your sins and by faith open your heart and life to Jesus Christ. The Bible's words are true: "Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved" (Acts 4:12).
