Should I quit my job?
Q: I dread getting up and going to work, because I hate my job. I'd change jobs if I thought I could get something better, but jobs are in short supply here and I'm not sure I'd find anything. Should I quit anyway? -- H.J.
A: I don't know, of course, whether or not you should try to change jobs -- but God knows what is best for you, and I strongly urge you to seek His will. Remember: God's way is always best -- always.
But even if it's His will for you to keep your present job, I hope you'll find ways to change your attitude. That may seem impossible, I know -- but it can happen, as you begin to see your work as a responsibility God has given you. You see, as long as we see our work only as a burden or a necessary evil, we'll never be completely happy -- and we'll probably be resentful or angry. But God doesn't want us to be like this. I often think of the Apostle Paul's words, written while he was in prison: "I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances" (Philippians 4:11).
What can you do? First, be thankful for what you do have. Few jobs are completely exciting or fulfilling, and we may have to work with people who are difficult or unpleasant. But ask God to help you see your job as a gift from Him, and as an opportunity to do something worthwhile -- as well as provide for your family. Ask Him also to help you be sensitive to the hurts of those around you.
Then ask God to help you do your work faithfully and well -- even if conditions aren't perfect. The Bible says, "Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people" (Ephesians 6:7).
