Is sincerely trying to do what's right what counts with God?

By Billy Graham, Tribune Content Agency on

Q: If I sincerely try to do what's right, isn't that what really counts with God? After all, no one is perfect, but if we sincerely try to be good, that ought to be enough, shouldn't it? -- T.H.

A: I'm thankful you are concerned about your relationship with God; the person who is in the most danger spiritually is the one who ignores God and has no concern for their spiritual wellbeing. They may worry about their health, or fill their lives with all kinds of entertainment, but sadly they never give a thought to the health of their souls.

Sincerity, however, is not enough -- which is why I urge you to take the next step, and put your faith and trust in Jesus Christ. You see, no matter how sincerely we try to do good and please God, we still fall short of His standard -- which is perfection. God is absolutely holy and pure, and even one sin -- just one -- would be enough to banish us from His presence.

And that is why we need Christ, for He came into the world to do for us what we could never do for ourselves. He was without sin, but on the cross He took upon Himself your sins and my sins, and He died in our place. In other words, He took upon Himself the judgment that you and I deserve for our sins. Now He offers us salvation as a free gift -- free, because He has already paid the price for it.

Turn to God today, confessing to Him that you know you are a sinner, and telling Him you want to trust Christ alone for your salvation. The Bible says, "It is by grace you have been saved, through faith ... not by works, so that no one can boast" (Ephesians 2:8-9).
