How do we know Heaven exists?

By Billy Graham, Tribune Content Agency on

Q: I want to believe in Heaven, and sometimes I do, but then I begin wondering if it's just something people dreamed up. Maybe we won't know whether or not Heaven exists until we die. -- Mrs. D.McK.

A: Heaven not only exists, but God wants us to know that it exists -- and He also wants us to know that when we die, we can go to be with Him in Heaven forever. Jesus said, "I am going there to prepare a place for you" (John 14:2).

How do we know Heaven isn't just something people dreamed up? One reason is because of God's promises. From one end of the Bible to the other, the Bible tells us that we were created in the image of God -- that is, God put something of Himself within us. And just as God cannot die, neither can our souls or spirits die. The Psalmist declared, "Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever" (Psalm 23:6).

Above all, however, we know Heaven is real because of Jesus Christ. He came into the world for one reason: to make it possible for us to go to Heaven. Sin has closed Heaven's door to us -- but by His death on the cross, Jesus Christ took upon Himself the judgment we deserve for our sins. And by His resurrection He conquered sin and death and Hell forever!

Don't wander in the fog of doubt any longer, but turn to Jesus Christ and put your faith and trust in Him alone for your salvation. His promise is for you: "I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die. ... Do you believe this?" (John 11:25-26).
