This week in 2000, a man in Israel became the first recipient of the Jarvik 2000, the first total artificial heart able to maintain blood flow and generate a pulse.

Ig Nobel Apprised

The Ig Nobel Prizes celebrate achievements that make people laugh, then think. A look at real science that's hard to take seriously, and even harder to ignore.


In 2021, the Ig Nobel Prize in peace went to a trio of scientists who tested the hypothesis that males evolved beards to provide protection against punches to the face by absorbing and dispersing energy.

Finding: Synthetic beard constructs absorbed 30% more energy than constructs without beards, so, yeah, maybe.
