(UPI) National Bike to Work Day, celebrated annually on the third Friday in May, started in 1955 to promote healthier commuting habits.

The holiday was founded in 1955 by the League of American Bicyclists, a nonprofit cycling organization, as part of the celebrations of Bike to Work Week and National Bike Month.

National Bike to Work Day was founded to highlight the health benefits of using a bicycle for commuting. The holiday is endorsed by the American Medical Association.
