Poppy seed bagel causes woman in labor to test positive for drugs

(UPI) A New York state mother was temporarily separated from her newborn son after a bagel caused a false positive on a drug test administered while she was in labor.

Elizabeth Dominguez of Tonawanda said staff at the hospital in Niagara Falls took a urine sample for testing while she was in labor and they later told her she had tested positive for opiates.

"I did a urine test and it came back that I tested positive for opiates," she told WKBW-TV. I called my husband freaking out saying 'how is this possible?' I don't do drugs.

Dominguez said she and her husband determined the everything bagel she had eaten earlier in the day was covered in poppy seeds, which are derived from the opium plant and have been known to cause false positives in drug tests.

The newborn, Carter Dominguez, tested negative for opiates, but the hospital followed procedure and contacted Child Protective Services.

Dominguez said she and the baby were separated when she was discharged but Carter was kept pending the outcome of an investigation.

Authorities eventually determined the test was indeed the result of poppy seed consumption and Carter is now at home with his parents.

"Expectant moms are warned not to eat all kinds of things -- why don't they warn about poppy seeds?" Dominguez told the New York Post. All of this could have been so easily prevented.
