(UPI) A wayward raccoon caused a stir in a Michigan city when it climbed to the third floor of a building and became stranded, prompting a rescue operation.

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety said the raccoon was spotted on the outside of the third floor of a downtown building Tuesday, and Kalamazoo County Animal Control summoned police to help with the rescue.

Traffic on a busy downtown street was reduced to a single lane for about an hour during the rescue, police said.

A fire department ladder truck was summoned to the scene and authorities attempted to capture the raccoon in a net. The animal jumped out of the net and ended up falling to the ground, where it was safety captured.

Animal Control said the raccoon serious injury from the fall and later was released "into a much safer habitat."
