(UPI) The mayor of an Italian town said temporary speeding cameras installed near a pedestrian crossing caught more than 58,000 speeders in under two weeks.

Mayor Alessandro Alessandri said the cameras were installed after repeated complaints about reckless speeding in Acquentico, and the cameras logged 58,568 speeding incidents in the town of only 120 residents in less than two weeks.

He said the data amounts to one in three drivers speeding through the area, with some clocked doing up to 84 mph in the 31 mph zone.

Alessandri said officials have decided to make the temporary speed cameras permanent in the hopes of curbing the speeding epidemic before it leads to injuries.
