(UPI) Students at a Florida high school were moved to alternate classrooms Tuesday morning after an alligator was spotted on campus.

The Palm Beach County School District said students attending classes in portable classrooms outside the main building at Royal Palm Beach High School were moved to safer locations Tuesday morning after an alligator was spotted lurking around a nearby retention pond.

Wildlife officers arrived at the school at about 7 a.m. to search for the alligator.

District spokeswoman Kathy Burstein said classes would go on as scheduled, but some would be in different locations to keep students safe.

The district said a professional trapper has been summoned to the school to search for -- and potentially relocate -- the gator.
