(UPI) A monkey that broke out of its crate at an airport in Texas was captured Monday evening, according to American Airlines officials.

The monkey was tranquilized and put back in a cage after escaping its crate and running loose in San Antonio International Airport for about two hours.

"After the arrival of American Airlines 1014 from Chicago O'Hare, a monkey that was en route to a local animal sanctuary and refuge in the San Antonio-area inadvertently became free of his cage," American Airlines said.

The monkey was identified as a Rhesus macaque named Darwin that was being transported from Brown University to Born Free USA animal sanctuary in Cotulla, CEO Prashant Khetan told San Antonio Express-News.

Khetan added the stress of travel likely caused Darwin to escape.

"This is a Rhesus macaque in a situation that's not normal," he said. It's not uncommon, but a reminder for us that when animals are in captivity, they can be unpredictable.

The airport's resident wildlife biologist and Animal Care Services staff were called in to help capture the monkey, which was eventually cornered in the baggage handling area outside Terminal B.

No flights or passengers were affected by Darwin's escape.
