(UPI) Authorities in Colorado said they were summoned to a home on a report of a bear that tore through a screen and climbed into the basement.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said the call came in just before noon Sunday and the homeowners told deputies a bear had ripped through a screen and pushed through doors to get into their basement.

Deputies and officers from the Colorado Department of Parks and Wildlife responded to the home, but the bruin was gone by the time they arrived.

A CPW representative said an officer set a bear trap nearby in case the animal returns. They said the bear would be relocated if authorities manage to capture it.

Neighbors said they have noted an uptick in bear activity in recent weeks.

"At least three times a week there's a bear trying to get into our trash," Joe Heintzman, who lives across the street from the house where the bear broke into the basement, told KCNC-TV.

He said a bear nearly invaded his home last week by charging at an open window.

"I didn't know what to think but the reaction I had was to shut the window and I shut it real quick, cause it was almost face to face with me and it was going to crawl through that window, I guarantee it," he told KDVR-TV.
