New Jersey man's houseboat being carried away by ice

(UPI) A New Jersey man said he and his three dogs are currently sleeping in his van after his houseboat ended up frozen in the middle of a bay.

Danny Davis, 53, said he brought his three dogs -- Buddy, Blondy and Tiny -- to shore last week when ice began to form in Sandy Hook Bay around the 40-foot cabin cruiser they have called home for the past three years.

Davis said the vessel became embedded in a giant ice sheet and is being carried with the current, although he believes it to still be anchored.

He said tug boats offering ice breaker services have turned him down because he can't present proof of insurance.

Davis said an ice breaker could also cause damage to the boat's fiberglass hull, leaving him with few options but to wait for the ice to thaw.

"Nobody expected this much ice," he told WPIX-TV.

Davis said he and his dogs are staying in his van in the meantime, in the hopes of returning to their boat before too long.

"I love the water," Davis said. I want to live on it the rest of my life.
