(UPI) Tour boat passengers on an Australian river captured video of a rare white crocodile that swam up to the craft for a snack.

Shai Ager, an ecologist and passenger on the boat Sunday, said tour guides told them the crocodile's name is Pearl and she was first spotted in November.

"We saw the white albino crocodile and, as far as I'm aware, it was only seen last November so a lot of people weren't sure if it was still alive or not," Ager told the Australian Broadcasting Corp.

The croc was spotted on the Adelaide River, just outside of Darwin.

Ager said Pearl is estimated to be 40 to 60 years old. She said it is uncommon for white crocodile hatchlings to make it to adulthood.

"They can be a little less rare when they're younger but most of them don't survive to maturity, so to see a [10-foot] -- a white crocodile like this -- in the wild is just amazing, it's just very rare," she said.

She said the white coloration hurts a crocodile's chances of survival.

"They usually don't live past maturity because predators like larger, more dominant crocodiles eat them and they are also hunted down by poachers if found. I wanted to know if it was still alive -- and yep it is! It's definitely been on my bucket list," Ager told NT News.

Tour guide Mike Keighley of Spectacular Jumping Crocodile Cruises was leading the tour that first spotted Pearl in November.

"This one came up five weeks ago and just stood out and surprised all our crew," Keighley said. They named it Pearl and got attached to it.

He said Pearl is not an albino croc, but rather has a condition known as hypomelanism.
