Massive 5-1/4 pound avocado could be world's heaviest

(UPI) A Hawaii woman walking near a local school discovered a massive avocado that she said breaks the Guinness record for the world's heaviest.

Pamela Wang said she was walking Nov. 26 in Kealakekua, near Konawaena High School, when she came across a gargantuan avocado.

"I see avocados every day and I pick up avocados every day, but this one ... it was hard to miss," she told West Hawaii Today. It was as big as my head.

Wang's friends suggested the avocado could be the world's largest, but Guinness World Records only has a category for the world's heaviest avocado -- a title that Wang said her avocado might deserve.

The current Guinness record is 4 pounds, 13.2 ounces, but Wang's avocado weighed in at 5 pounds, 3.68 ounces.

The weighing at ChoiceMART in Kealakekua was overseen by Ken Love, executive director of Hawaii Tropical Fruit Growers and a South Kona farmer.

"I've seen [avocados] longer and I've seen them fatter, but not both," Love said. I think people have other ones that they don't weigh, but I think this one, it was way up there.

Wang took the avocado to Florian's Cafe, where it became a snack she shared with friends.

"It tasted excellent," she said. The tree is very good. We had 10 people there and didn't even use up half of one half of the avocado.

The leftover avocado was left with the restaurant to be served to customers.
