(UPI) Police in a New Jersey said they have found the vandal responsible for damaging a city's Christmas light display: A Scroogey squirrel.

The Sea Girt Police Department said officers investigating reports of the city's Christmas display being damaged by vandals during the Thanksgiving weekend caught the culprit in the act during a repeat appearance Saturday.

Photos posted to Facebook by the department show the squirrel chewing through wires and moving the decorations around on the display.

One resident had previously described the vandals to WABC-TV as "rats," but clarified that the culprits were probably local kids -- they were closer the first time.

"The Sea Girt Police Department is proud to report that the case of our broken holiday lights has been solved. We are happy that no human acted as a grinch in this incident. The squirrel was 'charged' with criminal mischief and released on bail," the Facebook post said.
