(UPI) Residents of a beachside New Jersey neighborhood spotted a deer wandering along the water.

Toms River Police shared a photo of the deer strolling along the shoreline and swimming in the water Wednesday morning.

"Residents of the Ortley Beach section of Toms River awoke to a very rare sight this morning," police said. This fella decided to go for a swim in the surf near Colony Road.

Laurie Starace, who alerted authorities to the deer's presence, said the deer {link:appeared to be confused and tired.

"He swims way out into the ocean then swims back in exhausted," she told Toms River Patch. He has been in front of our home all night and is still here.

Toms River Police Department spokesman Ralph Stocco said police have been attempting to lure the deer away from the beach to no avail.

"We have spent the better part of today trying to coax a deer to leave the land of sun and fun and make his way back to the woods," he said. We are trying our very best to get him home.

Police encouraged residents to stay away from the deer, stating it would likely find its way to a more traditional habitat on its own.

"If you see it wandering around Ortley Beach, don't approach it," police said, Just let it be as it will get scared.
