(UPI) A steer that escaped a New York slaughterhouse and became a social media celebrity while running loose in Brooklyn has a new home at a sanctuary.

Police said the animal, which was first identified as a cow and then a bull before being correctly labeled a steer, escaped from a Brooklyn slaughterhouse about 11 a.m. Tuesday and social media soon lit up with reported sightings of the "Brooklyn cow."

At least one witness reported seeing the steer knock over a stroller with a toddler inside. Firefighters confirmed a toddler was treated for minor injuries stemming from a toppled stroller, but investigators could not confirm whether the steer was involved.

Authorities said the steer eventually wandered onto a fenced-in soccer field in the Parade Grounds section of Prospect Park. Police said the fence allowed them to work more slowly to carefully corral the steer without endangering nearby humans.

Witnesses said police attempted unsuccessfully to corner the steer in a soccer net and chased it with hand-held nets for a time before it was eventually tranquilized by officers from an emergency services unit.

The tranquilized steer was penned in by two New York Police Department SUVs, the fence and a park bench, police said.

Officers trained in large animal capture arrived about a half hour later, lassoed the steer and led it onto a police department horse carrier.

Animal rights activists met with NYPD community affairs officers during the rescue and arranged for the animal to be transported to a new home at the Skylands Animal Sanctuary and Rescue in Wantage, N.J.

The rescue said in a Facebook post the steer has been dubbed Shankar, a name meaning "one who brings about happiness or prosperity."
