McDonald's 'hamburger straws' became viral craze in Japan

on

Published in Weird News

(UPI) Japanese social media users are sharing photos of the latest food trend in the country -- using McDonald's burgers as drink toppers.

The trend, Kotaku reported, is known variously as "drink x hamburger" and hamburger straw and involves punching a hole in the middle of a burger to allow the straw to be inserted through the middle and into the beverage.

The "hamburger straw" has been done with sandwiches as thick as a Big Mac, and photos posted to Instagram show some adventurous photographers using McChicken sandwiches and various breakfast sandwiches to top their drinks.

Observers suggested in Cosmopolitan the trend may have been inspired by a trend that began last summer, when people started photographing iced coffee beverages with doughnuts around the straws.
