(UPI) A frantic squirrel caused a minor travel delay after wandering onto a train in Massachusetts during the Thursday morning commute.

A passenger reported the squirrel hopping between seats on the train at about 8:30 a.m. prompting Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority to assess the situation.

"The train was held for 3 minutes at Jackson Station, while an MBTA official cleared the car on which the squirrel was reported by a customer," an MBTA spokesperson told Patch.

After a delay of about three minutes the 10 passengers on the train with the squirrel moved to different portions of the six-car train and it continued along its route.

"To have delayed the train any longer than necessary would have been nuts," MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo told the Boston Globe.

The squirrel's free ride ended in mysterious fashion, as it was nowhere to be found when staff checked the empty car after the train arrived at its destination.
