March 27 (UPI) -- The California Highway Patrol said morning traffic on Interstate 680 in Walnut Creek hit a snag when two loose horses were spotted "violating the carpool lane."

The CHP's Contra Costa station said in a Facebook post callers reported the horses running loose in Alamo about 7:25 a.m. Monday.

"The horses evaded responding CHP units for approximately 20 minutes on city streets before making their way onto Interstate 680," the post said.

Shocked commuters captured video of the horses weaving through traffic, which slowed in the northbound lanes to allow the animals to pass unharmed.

"In a collaborative effort with CHP units, Walnut Creek Police, and Contra Costa County Animal Control the horses were corralled at approximately 8:30 am. Animal Control safely returned the horses to their owner," the Facebook post said.

The highway was closed for about 15 minutes while Animal Control officers retrieved the equines.

The CHP joked on Twitter the horses were caught "violating the carpool lane."
