National Puppy Day: North Carolina dog gets new prosthetic paws

March 23 (UPI) -- A North Carolina rescue puppy is celebrating National Puppy Day in style thanks to a new set of prosthetic front paws that restored his mobility.

The Boston Terrier Rescue of NC, located in Durham, said Teddy was brought in as a 10-week-old puppy missing his front paws and parts of his back paws about a year ago.

"We don't know the full story about what happened to Teddy's feet but we knew he needed our help!" the rescue said in a Facebook post.

The rescue had Teddy examined at the North Carolina College of Veterinary Medicine & Veterinary Hospital, where veterinarians said he would be able to receive prosthetics once he stopped growing at about a year old.

Barbara Bradley, who fosters dogs for the rescue group, took Teddy into her home and decided to make him a permanent member of the family.

"He was just the cutest little thing and so pitiful with just stubs for front legs and not much more on the back," Bradley told The News & Observer.

"By that time we had absolutely fallen in love with him," she said. He's a typical dog and gets around on his stubs pretty well, but of course can't go for walks like a regular dog on a sidewalk.

Teddy was fitted earlier this year with prosthetics made by Bio-Tech Prosthetics & Orthotics.

Bradley posted a video to Facebook showing Teddy clicking his way down the sidewalk on his new paws.

Teddy's family said they are keeping an eye on him to determine whether he needs prosthetics for his back paws, too.
