DODGE COUNTY, Wis. (UPI) -- Authorities in southern Wisconsin said a sea of red washed over a highway when hundreds of thousands of Skittles spilled onto a road.

The Dodge County Sheriff's Office said in a Facebook post that deputies found the hundreds of thousands of red Skittles littering County Highway S, near Blackbird Road, at 8:51 p.m. Tuesday night.

The sheriff's office later learned the Skittles had been in a cardboard box on the back of a flatbed truck and that the box had softened and spilled its load when it became wet from the rain.

The Skittles had been deemed unfit for packaging and were en route to be fed to cattle, the sheriff's office said.

"In the end these Skittles are actually for the birds!" the post said.

The Dodge County Highway Department was notified and a cleanup effort was launched on the road.
