World's oldest captive Komodo dragon dies at 30

CALGARY, Alberta (UPI) -- The world's oldest captive Komodo dragon died in a Canadian zoo, according to zoo staff.
The Calgary Zoo shared a Facebook post announcing that Loka, the 30-year-old Komodo dragon, died at the age of 30.
"During the last 10 days her appetite dropped away, and following diagnostic work and end of life care, she passed away on July 25, 2016. She will be missed by all who cared for her," the zoo wrote.
Loka came to the Calgary Zoo from the Toronto Zoo in 2014 when she was placed under veterinary care as a geriatric animal and became well-known in the zoo's Eurasian Gateway building for her status as the world's oldest Komodo dragon.
The zoo estimates that only 3,000 - 5,000 Komodo remain in the wild. Curator of the Eurasia section Matt Korhonen told the Calgary Herald that Loka was also much older than the next oldest captive Komodo dragon.
"The second oldest dragon is only 22, so she wasn't just a little bit older, she was quite a bit older," he said.
