LINCOLN PARK, Mich. (UPI) -- A Michigan police officer went above and beyond the call of duty to ensure that a hungry citizen received their warm pizza.

Lincoln Park Police Department Officer Joe Sparks took over for a driver from Jet's Pizza after he was injured in a car crash while out for delivery.

"He had some scratches and some scrapes. He took a pretty good impact out there," Sparks said.

After having the driver's car towed and sending him to the hospital, Sparks noticed that the driver had left behind an undelivered pizza.

He originally intended to take the pizza back to the restaurant, but realized the address was "only a few blocks away" and decided to deliver it himself.

"I know someone on the other end was waiting for their food," Sparks told The Detroit News. I just figured it was the right thing to do.

Sparks soon arrived at the door of Carl Babik who had called Jet's Pizza about the whereabouts of his double pepperoni and cheese and was more than a bit confused to see the officer at his door.

"I'm like, 'Wait a minute...this is weird...why is a cop delivering my food?" Babik said.

After Sparks explained the situation and the confusion passed, Babik was unsure whether he should give the officer the $5 tip he usually pays the delivery driver.

"Who would tip a cop? I mean, come on," Babik said.

Sparks explained that he was on the clock and did not accept the tip so Babik decided to pay at the restaurant later.

Jet's Pizza thanked Sparks for his commitment by offering police free lunch, but he just considers it part of his job.

"I grew up in the city, so I try to give back when I can," he said.

The driver was diagnosed with a concussion and it is unclear when he will be able to return to work.
