DECATUR, Ill. (UPI) -- An Illinois retiree created a replica of Wales' Rhuddlan Castle from about 50,000 Lego bricks and posted a time-lapse video of its construction for a tourism campaign.

Bob Carney, 72, a retired dermatologist, was contacted by Cadw, the Welsh Government's historic environment service, when officials became aware of his 145 previous recreations of European castles using Lego bricks.

Carney built the castle and shared a time-lapse photo of its creation with Cadw, but he said it had to be "recycled" shortly after it was completed.

"A big castle like this probably has $9,000 worth of Lego. I don't have the money or the space to keep lots and lots of castles," he told the Chicago Sun-Times.

The castle replica, which measured 7-feet-by-5-feet, was commissioned as part of Cadw's "Pack Your Imagination" campaign, which encourages travelers to visit Welsh historic sites and create models and other artwork inspired by the visits.

Cadw said it will be flying Carney out to Wales in May to judge entries in the campaign and present prizes to the winning artists.

Carney said he and his wife, Judy, will visit 74 historic sites during their 23 days in Wales.

"When Judy and I enter Wales I am going to feel like a child in a candy store with a pocket full of change," Carney told Wales Online. There are so many wonderful castles in Wales, every place we visit is going to be a new thrill.
