Supermoon: A Super Emotional Start to the New Year

Holiday Mathis on

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). You're eager to try things, and you'll be good right out of the gate, as beginner's luck is your cosmic gift at the moment. Also, you've special luck for approaching people you don't know.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). Last night, it was the noisemakers and rowdy revelers who made all the commotion. Maybe that's why today you're in a quiet mood, and you don't have to raise a hoot; your accomplishments will make all the noise for you.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). There's no compliment like your attention. Who deserves it today? You're definitely in the running, as you've been doing so much to make the transition into the year a jolly one for all. Maybe you should give it to yourself!

TODAY'S BIRTHDAY (Jan. 1). Your gift for reading people and getting quickly to the heart of what they need and want will make you a top seller this year, even if you're not in sales. People will buy into your ideas and your vision of the future that includes your lighthearted wishes and your deep desires. You'll love, work and attract all you need. Libra and Gemini adore you. Your lucky numbers are: 6, 20, 22, 23 and 50.

COSMICALLY CURIOUS ABOUT... TALKING ANIMALS: There have been, in the history of the world, a number of talking animals. Birds who learned to verbalize human language. Chimpanzees who learned to sign. These animals have expressed many messages, but scientists have only one animal on record -- an African grey parrot named Alex -- who has ever asked an existential question. Alex asked what color he was.

One might conclude that there is, in the animals, a kind of existential contentedness that humans do not possess. As a person who struggles to accept life as it is, I envy any being with animalistic and unquestioning acceptance of a natural reality. Yet a certain discontented wonderment over one's own existence seems ingrained in the very fiber of humanity. To stretch beyond what is currently known and what can currently be proved is to be fully human. What clearly distinguishes us from bird and beast? Questions. Well, questions and cable television bills.

In the weeks to come, I will use this space in the column to explore metaphysical topics that tickle the curiosity. If there is a topic you are particularly curious about, please ask a question. It's the human thing to do! holidaymathis@gmail.com

CELEBRITY PROFILES: Two American heroes were Capricorns born on the first day of the year: war hero Paul Revere and American flag maker Betsy Ross. Revere was born under the warrior moon of Aries and had Mercury, Jupiter and Uranus in adventurous Sagittarius. Ross was born when the moon was in Cancer, the sign of America and of patriotism.
