Planetary Power Struggle

Holiday Mathis on

The sun, Mercury and Pluto square off in an epic power struggle. The most difficult opponent in the skirmish for control is the opponent within. Yet we can usually pin the blame on those difficult people in our lives who embody the conflict so well. We even fool ourselves into believing they are the real problem. Alas, the answers still lie within.

ARIES (March 21-April 19). Traditions are, by definition, historical. Yet with the world rolling ever forward, you have the option of carrying them into the future or leaving them behind. What traditions do you want to keep as you roll right along with it?

TAURUS (April 20-May 20). There are things that are clearly not going to work out no matter how much effort goes into them. Put those in the "won't" pile, not the "can't" pile. Let's not infantilize ourselves by saying that we can't.

GEMINI (May 21-June 21). You'll steer clear of potentially addictive games and products that you don't want to need. What helps is that you've got plenty else going on. With your full agenda, there will be little room for such things to seduce you.

CANCER (June 22-July 22). It would seem that you choose whom you want to choose, yet what's actually going on is that you're limited to the options you see in your immediate environment. So how free really is your choice?

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). Today's happiness depends on what you're willing to do to achieve it. Are you willing to adjust your expectation? Change the plan? Change your role? Think of things differently?

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). There are way more wonders in the world than the official seven. Because of your increased curiosity and awareness of the world, you'll note more than one in your immediate environment before the sun goes down on the day.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). Get out your metaphoric broom. The old things need to go away so you have room for the new things to come into your realm. (Actually, what's needed may be more akin to a metaphoric moving crew plus truck.)

SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). There are some things you can leave to chance that will have better results than if you hadn't. And then there are things that really must be commandeered. Knowing the difference -- that's your cosmic gift today.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). You're powerful, partly because it's not your goal to be. Your whole aim is to take care of those who need you. It turns out that the goal is enough to make you bigger and stronger by the day.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). The gentle stirring of the trees isn't much, but it's an indicator of the magnificent storm that's coming. Pay attention to the metaphoric representation of this in your life today.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). Any fool can cheat when dealt a bad hand of cards. It's more important to play fairly when you have a winning hand. Hold yourself to higher standards in regard to those areas in which you find yourself advantaged.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). You've already formed an opinion about it. There aren't so many who have! Therefore, if someone else seconds that opinion, you'll not only agree but also consider that person to be a sort of kindred.

TODAY'S BIRTHDAY (Oct. 9). Try not to impose too many rules on yourself going into this new chapter, because you're in a rebellious mood! Your energy is high, and you're ready for challenge, not restriction. Changes at work bring more fun and greater balance to your life. Expect exciting family additions. Financial highs: now, November and June. Cancer and Pisces adore you. Your lucky numbers are: 6, 20, 4, 44 and 19.

ASTROLOGY OF COLUMBUS DAY: In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue. It was in this week, of that year, that a series of mistakes and miscalculations led to the "discovery" that would alter the course of world history. It was, in reality, nothing new. The Norse explorer Leif Erikson had already been to North America centuries earlier, and possibly other Europeans had, as well. Oscar Wilde later reported, "America had often been discovered before Columbus, but it had always been hushed up."

It is interesting to note that on Oct. 12, 1492, when Christopher Columbus and his Castilian crew reached the shore of an island in the present-day Bahamas, the sun was the only planet in the congenial, balanced and fair sign of Libra. The moon was in Cancer, representing the concept of "home" -- a concept that would, after that fateful day, be forever altered for indigenous people and explorers alike. Neptune, the planet of dreams, was in Sagittarius -- the realm of travel, adventure, exploration and new worlds.

CELEBRITY PROFILES: Every year on Oct. 9, fans gather at the Strawberry Fields memorial in New York's Central Park to celebrate the birth and mourn the loss of the iconic musician and poet John Lennon. Lennon was born under the intelligent, altruistic Aquarius moon. His natal Mercury's being in Scorpio indicates piercing wit and a talent for creating mystery. His Venus and Neptune's being in detailed Virgo represents tireless passion for his lifework.
