White to Play and Mate in Two

Published in Chess Puzzles

This mate in two won a first prize in an international competition. It was created by A. Ellerman.

Solution:

1.Rg7 Nd3 [ To block the bishop protection of h7. Other tries: 1...Rxg3 2.Rh7#; 1...Bxa6 2.Rh7#] 2.Kxd5# Some mates in three (but they do not count): 1.Rg6+ Kh7 2.Nf6+ Kh8 3.Rg8# Another try, purposely put in by the composer, is 1.Rg8. It works if Black cooperates and, thus, misleads you at first: 1.Rg8 d4 2.Rh8# BUT: 1.Rg8 e4 (1...Rcd3 2.Qe3+ Rxe3 3.Rh8#; 1...Bd3 2.Qe3+ Kh7 3.Nf6# make that a mate in three and not good enough.) 2.Qf4+ Kh7 3.Nf6# BTW, we hope you remembered which way those lined up Black and White pawns were going!
