White to Play and Draw

Pete Tamburro on

Published in Chess Puzzles

Yes, it's another desperate situation for White. Black is threatening to queen his pawn and even has more to follow. White, as with the last problem, can use the stalemate idea to force a draw. Can you find out how?

Solution:

1.Re1 g2+ 2.Kf2+ g1=Q+ [2...g1=R 3.Rf1 Rxf1+ 4.Kxf1 and Black is stalemated!] 3.Kf3 Qxe1 and White is stalemated! The White king had to go to f2 because going to e2 wouldn't work in the rook promotion variation as the Black king would escape via g2 after 3.Rf1. A clever effort by F. Lazard in 1912.
