White to Play
Published in Chess Puzzles
In this puzzle, from a game Cukierman-Tartakower, 1931, the first two moves are pretty easy to see. It's the third and fourth moves that require some imagination against Black's best defense.
Solution:
1.Qe7+ Kg8 2.Qe8+ Bf8 3.Re7 With the threat of Qxf7+. Black defends f7 and attacks the White queen with: 3...Be6 4.dxe6 Not only did White have to see the first two easy moves, but the 3rd move and now this brilliant 4th move! 4...Rxe8 5.exf7+ Kg7 6.fxe8Q+ Kh6 [The game followed the given moves in bold, but Black could have only have made the game last a move longer with alternatives. 6...Bxe7 7.Qxe7+ Kh6 (7...Kg8 8.Bd5#) 8.Qf6+ Kh5 9.Bf3#] 7.Rxh7+ Rxh7 8.Qg6#
