White to Play and Win!

Pete Tamburro on

Published in Chess Puzzles

We give our last tidbit (a favorite problem of V. Lenin!?) from Treasure Chess by Bruce Pandolfini. Extra credit question: What famous actor actually played the character "Bruce Pandolfini" in what movie?

Solution:

1.Kb7 Kb4 [1...a1=Q 2.Bf8#] 2.Bxd4 wins as the bishop can give itself up when the a-pawn queens and then White will queen his pawn with an easy mate to follow.

Extra Credit: Bruce was played by Ben Kingsley in Searching for Bobby Fischer. Why Kingsley chose a Scottish accent for a New Yorker, and an Italian named one at that, apparently had something to do with a play he had just come from performing, and didn’t quite lose the first accent!
