The right way to win was 1.Bh7+ Kh8 2.Bxg7+ Kxg7 3.Qg6+ Kh8 4.Qxh6! Hartlaub went with 4.Rxd5 and won, but his foe had this defense- 4… Qxb5 5.Re1 Qb2 6.Rde5 (6.Rh5 Qg7) 6...Bg5 7.Rxg5 hxg5 8.Qh5 Qg7 9.Bd3+ Kg8 4...Rf7 5.Bg6+ Kg8 6.Bxf7+ Kxf7 7.Rxd5 exd5 7...Qxb5 8.Qh7+ Ke8 9.Re1 Qc6 10.Qg6+ Kf8 11.Rh5 Bd8 12.Rd1 e5 13.Rh8+ Ke7 14.Rh7+ Kf8 15.Qf7# 8.Qxb6 with an easy win.
