First, a happy Veterans’ Day to those who served. Chess is a game of war. Military service is not a game. Our position today is from a blitz game I played years ago. It fits in with our attack on f7 theme this week. The question here is which capture on f7 is best?


The most powerful capture is 1.Rxf7+ Rxf7 1...Kh8 2.Ne6 Qc8 (The actual game went 2...Qe8 3.Nxf8 Bxe2 4.Rxh7#) 3.Rxe7 Bxe2 4.Nxf8 Qxf8 5.Nf7+ Kg8 6.Rxd7 2.Ne6+ Kh8 3.Nxf7+ Kg8 4.Nh6+ Kh8 5.Nxd8 Rxd8 6.Nf7+ Kg8 7.Nxd8 Bxe2 8.e6 and White wins in all variations above (except the mate) by overwhelming material.
