Every good chess player knows how to win this key endgame position. One of the “must know” positions.


It’s all about the X-Ray attack. 1.a7 Rb1+ 2.Ka6 Ra1+ 3.Kb6 Key point to remember: 3.Kb5?? Kc7= 4.Rh8 Rxa7 5.Rh7+ Kb8 6.Rh8+ Kb7= 3...Rb1+ 4.Kc5 Rc1+ 4...Kc7 5.Rh8 Ra1 6.a8Q 5.Kd4 Ra1 6.Rh8 Rxa7 7.Rh7+ The X-Ray attack wins, assuming White can mate with K+R.
