White to Play

Published in Chess Puzzles

A favorite puzzle of mine for teaching purposes. It shows student that you have to be aware of the elements of chess in more complicated positions. In this position it looks like Black has an easy win as he escorts the pawns down the board, BUT…

The elementary principle hidden within this position is that a king, bishop and a- or h-pawn cannot force the pawn through to getting a queen if the bishop is the opposite color square in movement than the actual queening square. White sees that here and saves the game 1.Rd8+ Rc8 2.Rxc8+ Kxc8 3.Ba6 bxa6 and the White king goes to a1 where it can’t be chased off for the pawn to queen.
