White to Play

Pete Tamburro on

Published in Chess Puzzles

I glanced at this position while browsing through an old British Chess Magazine. Hmmm…how DOES White draw this?? I couldn’t see any tricky knight forks. Hmmm…

Pushing the pawn seemed like a loser, but: 1.c6 c2 2.c7 c1=Q 3.Nc4 Qxc4 4.c8=Q Qxc8 Stalemate! I love stalemate saves! If White doesn’t take, Q+N won’t beat Q in the endgame.
