White to Play

Our last entry for tricky week. Actually, it’s quite diabolic. White wins this double rook and pawn ending and uses every trick in the book. The trick at the end is one every chess player should know about.

A composition by Kasparian. Just the main variations are given: 1.Raa7 f3+ 2.Kf2 Rg6 [2...Rh6 3.b7 Rh2+ 4.Kg3!! Rg2+ 5.Kh3 f2 6.b8Q f1Q 7.Qb3+ Rf7 8.Qxf7+ Qxf7 9.Rxf7] 3.b7 Rg2+ 4.Kf1 f2 [4...Rb2 5.Ra8! f2 6.Rxf8+ Kxf8 7.Rd8+ Ke7 8.b8=Q] 5.Rf7! Rb8 6.Ra8 Kxf7 7.Rxb8 Rg1+ 8.Kxf2 Rb1 9.Rh8 and if the rook takes the pawn, it's lost after the x-ray check on h7.A neat trick to remember for rook and pawn endgames. I've used it several times.
